2. Volunteering
Something you could actually join in Yangon, rather than simply donating money
How foreigners typically plug in:
- Facebook groups (same expat groups you’d use for football) often circulate volunteer calls and one-off events – food drives, teaching stints, fundraisers.
- Faith communities and international schools frequently run their own charity arms open to outside volunteers.
- Platforms like Worldpackers list Myanmar placements, though most of their live listings skew toward rural/regional work rather than Yangon proper.
Note: Myanmar’s environment for NGO and volunteer work has gotten more sensitive and fluid post-2021 – some organizations that were easy to walk into a few years ago may have changed status, moved online-only, or gone quiet.
I’d treat any specific org as needing a direct, current check before coming – a quick message to their Facebook page or a check for recent activity would be the safe move.
- Yangon Animal Shelter – rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes stray animals, welcoming volunteers for feeding, cleaning, and socializing with animals.
Easier for a short visit. They explicitly say volunteers are welcome to visit and socialize with and spend time with the dogs; they ask visitors to contact them beforehand. (Yangon Animal Shelter)

- Thabyay Education Foundation (Need to check) focuses on education and training for young people in Myanmar, welcoming volunteers to teach English, lead workshops, or help administratively.

Fund, education, training, expertise, skills, technology, materials and machinery for various sectors and areas are urgently and crucially needed at ThaBarWa Center. Provides free Vipassana Meditation, food and shelter to yogis. Builds Dhamma Hospital Project.
ThaBarWa is the place where volunteers can donate their skills, time, energy, labor, money and materials to gain merit and practice meditation for a worthy cause, and to look after the welfare of the residents taking refuge at ThaBarWa Center. ThaBarWa channels the money and materials received in donations to provide a peaceful venue for people to practice Dhamma without worry.
3. Teach for ASEAN
Teach for ASEAN is a volunteer-based organization that provides educational and workplace skills training to disadvantaged youth. Needs volunteers but they will be screened and trained.

- Mary K. Yap Foundation – interesting for foreigners.
Their Yangon project office is at Pearl Condo on Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, and their website was updated in July 2026 saying they are looking for volunteers. They work with children/orphanage communities and explicitly mention volunteering in their Yangon office or at project sites.

11. Hla Day – Artisan Handicrafts 🎁 Store

Located in Kyauktada Township, Hla Day works directly with local artisans, people living with disabilities, and marginalized communities to design and sell fair-trade products.
The organization frequently engages foreign volunteers for design assistance, product development workshops, marketing/branding consulting, and digital strategy.
